The Placencia Flats and Tobacco Caye are two of the finest saltwater fly-fishing destinations in the world. Whether you’re stepping onto the flats for the very first time or you’re a seasoned angler chasing permit, tarpon, and bonefish, both locations offer their own unique charm and world-class fly-fishing opportunities. With crystal-clear flats, vibrant coral systems, expansive lagoon habitats, and thriving fish populations, Belize is a paradise for beginners and veteran anglers alike.

Here’s everything you need to know before your next trip.

Fly Fishing in Placencia

The Placencia Flats, also known as Permit Alley, is an angler’s dream with its calm, shallow flats protected by the Belize Barrier Reef and miles of mangrove shoreline. These waters give new anglers plenty of space to practice casting, work on accuracy, and sight-fish confidently.  It’s one of the best places in Belize to begin your saltwater fly-fishing journey, especially if you’re hoping to take shots at permit, tarpon, snook, and bonefish further out by the cayes.

Placencia blends convenience, variety, and accessibility, making it an excellent base for both fishing and family adventures. Dad can sneak away for a full day on the water and still make it back by 3:00 PM for family time and dinner. While you fish with Capt. Dermin, ask Vanessa about inland tours your family can enjoy, including:

  1. Monkey River Tours
  2. Sunset Cruise
  3. Waterfalls, Caves and Jungle excursions
  4. Mayan ruins
  5. Chocolate Farm Tour
  6. Spa Reservations

Fly Fishing at Tobacco Caye

Tobacco Caye offers a completely different experience for hardcore fly fishing anglers. One that many of my returning clients fall in love with instantly. Once I introduce anglers to the island, they often book it year after year.

The fishing here is on another level: Shot after shot. Permit after permit. Bonefish cruising. Tarpon rolling. Grand Slams and even Super Slams happen here because the fishery is wild, healthy, and incredibly productive.

What makes Tobacco Caye truly special is its solitude. Fishing near the reef puts us far away from the crowds, hotels, and boat traffic you might find elsewhere.

It’s just you, your guide, the flats, and the fish. That peaceful separation allows me to teach, train, and coach anglers with zero distractions.

Most of my veteran anglers book Tobacco Caye every year and once you fish here, you’ll understand why.

Where to Stay on Tobacco Caye

My top recommendation is Reef’s End Lodge Reef’s End Lodge – Tobacco Caye at Tobacco Caye. It’s my favorite place to stay because the bar and restaurant are on-site. Yes, the bar!  After a long day on the flats, everything you need is just steps away. Rooms book fast, so make sure you reserve early.

Note: Staying on Tobacco Caye requires a 4-day minimum.

Which Destination Is Right for You?

Both destinations offer unforgettable experiences but the right choice depends on the style of trip you’re after. Placencia and Tobacco Caye is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and productive saltwater flats. Whether you choose Placencia for its accessibility or Tobacco Caye for its solitude, you’re guaranteed an unforgettable adventure  chasing permit, tarpon, snook and bonefish.

Plan early, bring your A-game, and let the flats of Southern Belize show you why this region is a bucket-list destination for fly anglers around the world.
